Ok, Im at the end of the line. My screen saver wont activate. When I preview screen savers IE: mystify, pipes,starfield,ect.ect. They all work fine. However once I have set a certain time (1min) the screensaver does not activate.
I have unplugged all joysticks. Logged off and on, I have downloaded and installed new drivers. And still nothing, my screen is always on. I have even downloaded other screen savers such as the Bliss one from the windows page, and still nothing. I can put the computer in Stand By mode and that will work, but it will turn on by it self after a random # of minutes. I dont know if this is anything, but I searched the computer for the Scrnsave.exe and its no where to be found. Should I have it?
Thank you in advance for your help, I want to get a new monitor, but dont want to buy one yet until I fix this problem. Ive run virus scans and no virus.
Defrag, scan disk, its a fairly new computer Pent IV 1.6mghz, 512mg ram, 64mb nvidia Geforce 3 TI200, all joysticks and wheels are off and removed. Hello and thank you all for your help. I do have Windows XP pro.
I have previewed all screen savers and the password protect box is unchecked. Today for testing and trouble shooting. When I preview screen savers. (they do work when I hit preview) sometimes they stop on their own.
Without me touching the mouse. I have downloaded the startup program as requested and I shall post the results. I looked in the MSconfig and I dont know what should be checked or not. They are all checked to me.
Thank you and please continue with your advice. But Im trying. Rumor has it that Flight Sim 2002 sometimes will disable screensavers. Is this true? Or what programs can I shut down using the Task Manager and what programs must be running.I want to close programs down one at a time and see if one is running that keeps screen savers from running. I do hit the apply button and Ill even log off (Im the only User and administrator) and even under the welcome screen.the screen saver doesnt activate there. Thank you again.
Hello all, hope you are having a good day. Ok, heres the latest. I have been running tests on the screen savers, and they all work. I have joysticks, wheels, keyboards, mouse all plugged in and I will 'preview' a screen saver for hours at a time. So I dont think that it is a mouse or interface problem.
Ive run several tests and the screen saver under 'preview' mode does not turn off. I have triple checked that all hard drives, monitors, and all power settings do not turn off before the screen saver launches. However, the screen saver still does not launch on its own. I have done the suggestion of the sfc /scannow with the XP cd in and it ran a check of my system, however there was no other notification on if there was any errors or corrupted files.soo I dont know if that worked or not. And I did download the startup program and here are the results. Shell & screensaver key from C: WINDOWS SYSTEM.INI: Shell=*INI section not found* SCRNSAVE.EXE=*INI section not found* drivers=*INI section not found* Shell & screensaver key from Registry: Shell=Explorer.exe SCRNSAVE.EXE=C: WINDOWS System32 ssstars.scr drivers=*Registry value not found* Policies Shell key: HKCU. Policies: Shell=*Registry key not found* HKLM.
Policies: Shell=*Registry value not found* I dont know what that means. Thank you in advance. I'm not familiar with that 'startup' program so I really can't give you any further info on the results you posted, but I'm sure someone else will. If running 'sfc/ scannow' didn't fix the problem, I would try either updating or reinstalling the drivers for your video card. This could be another cause of your problem and its a simple thing to try. I'm running out of ideas but its worth a shot.
If that fails to work, try booting from the XP cd and running the repair option. I could be wrong, but I still think it has something to do with your installation files. Let us know how it turns out. Well the first thing I would check is the regisrty that is were you are going to find out if anything is wrong or not. Here is what you do. Start/Run Type in regedit (now I should not have to tell you that doing this can get you into a world of hurt if you do it wrong or mess with stuff that is there with out knowing what you are doing. I will give simple enough instructions to were you should not get into trouble as long as you do not mess with nothing else.) Ok you are going to seeon the left hand side my computer make sure that the lil + is - and it will show you a hole list of stuff here is were we start Double Click HKEY_USERS Then Double Click Default Then Double Click Control Panel Then Double CLick Desktop Ok now that you have all that done on the right hand side you will see all the registries that are in that directory.
No worries this is easy scroll down and you will see SCRNSAVE.EXE double click on it and a lil window will pop up I do not want you to do any thing with this window except check two things First The Value Name should read SCRNSAVE.EXE If it does not make it so it does Next the Value Data should read logon.scr If it does not then make it so. NOTE**(The Value Data area is for the default screensaver the XP one that floats around on the welcome screen that everyone wishes they knew how to change.aha watson a clue this value can be changed as long as you know the string for the disired screensaver such as the bliss screensaver you could easily just type in bliss.scr and wala there is no more black XP screen saver on your welcome menu) Ok back to business if these values are correct then you def. Have a software issue with out a doubt in my mind. If it was a hardware issue you monitor would not go into stand bye mode if the hardware was triggering off the screen saver it would do the same for standbye mode.
